Quique Setien

That midfielder cant be arthur or de jong.
They are more of tempo players. Maintain possession players

I watch a lot of liverpool these days and i see their players try a lot of things. Not afraid to lose the ball. They will try a risky pass, a risky run and if it fails they fight like warriors to get back on defence

The only way we can play with both of them is if we have a fast winger constantly trying to run behind defence with fullbacks support. Striker is a must, there must be someone who would keep cb's on constant alert and messi doing his thing. We dont need frenkie and arthur that much upfield, we need their mobility and courage to attempt defence splitting passes. Griezmann had couple of runs behind defence and no one didnt even attempt to pass. There MUST be some risky passes to shake the opponents formation. As for counter attacking, i have no idea. Maybe Messi should sprint ahead so the team gets moving because they look like they are afraid to do anything without him being involved.
Its just terrible.
Fati is too young, griez plays out of position even with suarez injured, dembouz could and should be that extra spark infront, he is faster then anyone but injury prone. Setien should demand a striker by the end of the transfer window or we are doomed. Too bad we didnt go for ibrahimovic for this 6 month period, we could use his height and not affraid of anything mentality.

Valverde got sacked for a reason, let's just leave it at that.

For Setien, i'd still say it's too early to jump to conclusions but this far it doesn't look very promising. I get what he's trying to do but his way of getting there doesn't seem great and he definitely has some questionable choices like insisting on playing 3 at the back with one of them being Roberto.

We have dreadful defending. That is our problem. We were very bad in the first half and pretty good in the second. Especially after Vidal sub. Messi missed so many chances it's unreal for him. Fati, again, missed a clear chance and just took up space on the right for no reason. He was the only one really out of place for me as well as the Fdj, Arthur duo. Those two cannot be our two cms. They don't have any attacking mindset. I am not saying skillset, but mindset.
I think we should still give time to Setien before crucifying him but some red flags are on the horizon.
Late subs for example. I know he didn't have many options, but subs could have been made earlier.

About the formation, I know it's Barca's style to play 4-3-3 or some variation of it, but currently we simply don't have the personel to do it.
Maybe a switch to 4-4-2 is more realistic and more sound defensively.

I love the way this guy is being treated as some sort of messiah, when there is no evidence towards that at all. the only positive thing has been the increase in training sessions. tactically, he is a mess.

the concern I raised about the guy getting cut so much slack because people like his "style" appears to be true, bar a few level headed posters who acknowledge his flaws so far.

Who is treating him as a messiah?

Who is cutting him slack?

What do you think should be the appropriate reaction after these 3 games?

Yes there are man. There is a huge problem when players who are mostly potential and no certainty end up costing almost 100-150m.

Liverpool waited for the right time to spend big on VVD which raised a lot of eyebrows and now it looks a bargain. Even if they'd spent 100 million it would have been worth it.

In 2003 our annual revenue was 140 million and in that summer we spent 50 million. So relative to the crazy revenues now it makes sense for prices to go up. Indeed PSG inflated the market for sure with Neymar, but still if you sign the right players it's not an issue. Mbappe has gone up in value for example.

Nowadays we'd be paying 65 million for Alves and it would be fair.

Arthur - Vidal
Messi - Griezmann - Ansu

At this point Setien is probably better off playing this. Alena could have been decent here instead of Arthur, but Ernie's treatment of him without ever explaining to him why he was dropped lead to him being loaned out

We're lowkey screwed. We have no #9 so if Griezmann gets injured we're lining up with some kid there and Ansu IMO need to develop at his own pace alternating between Barca B and the 1st team, but we have no winger so he's in the lineup because we kinda need him, which is just so stupid given his age, inexperience and everything else.

You could switch Semedo with Roberto, but our defence is so garbage that we're probably better off sacrificing something in attack for a marginal gain in defence.

that's the exact eleven I would play with the injury situation being the way it is DonAK

it has a back four, one workhorse in midfield, de jong at dm and griezz as a striker.

When you guys see that team, which players do you believe has the quality to lead us to a CL and who can contribute for the next foreseeable future? I see only De Jong, Messi and Griezmann being able to do that. To some extend Arthur and maybe Ansu even though I still dont see "it" in Fati.

We have a shitload to do this transfer window. Lets hope we can get 3-4 who can contribute + Pedri and Couto will turn out great.

Whole of that backline needs changing.

Messi + Griezmann is a bad fit too.

I'm just hoping that Setien's change to a back 4 in the 2nd half of the Valencia game is an indication that he realizes that a back 3 with this team does not work especially with the many important games that are coming up.

Looking at the current market and all the flops we bought over the last 10 years, of course splashing big on someone who hits the ground running and becomes a success here is equal to nothing in the grand scheme of things.
For example, if we get Lautaro for 110 mil and he is our main striker for the next 7-8 years then the fee paid will never be remembered.
On the other hand we blown half a billion on Griezmann, Dembele and Coutinho(fees+salaries)

The Dembele and Coutinho fees were out of panic and desperation. We should have just accepted that we lost Neymar too late in the window to replace him. I think all of us were behind the Dembele signing but he should have cost no more than 70 million. The Griezmann fee was fair for a player of his quality, however. Obviously he may not be integrated correctly, but that's our fault. Atletico are far worse without him.

Some people behave as though public shock at transfer fees is a new phenomenon.
