Jordi Alba

Also he lacks a remarkable performance in the big game. The Messi-Alba connection rarely works in the CL.

True. That's mostly because in CL we face teams who have dangerous wingers, and Alba can't play full on offense without worrying about the defense too much. Say we play PSG with Mbappe on his side, would Alba be so adventurous? I think not.

Part of the reason why our chance creation drops in CL in KO stages. Alba doesn't do as much as in La Liga and there's nobody to create from midfield because we play everyone there in a defensive role first.

Part of the issues of using a fullback to hide your poor midfield creativity. Once his offensive output is reduced due to having a great rival to block defensively, that amount of offensive pedigree is greatly reduced.

I'm waiting for Alba to play this great vs the likes of City/PSG etc., when he'll have fast players like Mbappe and Sterling to worry about on defensive transition. It's easier to go full on offense when you're playing teams who have decent wingers at best. Once you get to meet teams having great attackers, as a left back you need to play a defense first game or else those attackers would run havoc in defense. Especially when we'll probably not be able to dominate the game vs Europe's best.

Let's not pretend he's Marcelo 2.0 vs the big teams, who can basically play full offense and neglect his defensive role because he's so damn great at dribbling, passing, even shooting.

Vs a big team Alba will stay back more, and it will be down to the midfield to create chances. God help us with 3 defenders in midfield trying to create chances for a rather static front three bar Dembele.

I cannot remember all the big-match Alba performances, so maybe someone can help me out. But:

1. This season Alba was the second MoM vs Real, and assisted, without Messi.
2. He scored a goal in the Euro 2012 final for Spain.
3. He scored the winning goal for Barça to win the remontada against AC Milan in 2013.
4. He scored against Real in the CdR semi-final in 2013.

I agree he did great at the Euro 2012 final. But the remains his goals are pretty indecisive.

He said last night he had no news about his renewal and that it's up to the club to do something if they want him.

Thanks Don.

Don't know what the heck the club is up to. What are they waiting for? We don't even have a good LB back-up, let alone a main LB replacement for Alba.

I wonder what Segura and Abidal does all day.

Best LB in the world, our 2nd most consistent player last few years isn't getting a renewal? This is a no brainer.

Agreed. I always thought he was the equal of Marcelo, not the shooter and dribbler but better in other aspects that make it a net even. This year of course he is far better than Marcelo overall.

Absolutely need to renew him.

he is turning 30 in a month or so.

I assume he wants a huge pay raise, negotiations will take a while for everyone to get what they want.

we might pull a dani alves and just keep alba till his contract runs out (31 years old) instead of investing high wages on a 4+ year contract on the most physically demanding roles in the squad.

why would Jordi Alba settle for a 2+1 deal?
no agent is that dumb especially someone who could easily get a better contract somewhere else

Let him see how easy it would be for him to get a great long term contract as a speed dependent 31 year old left back next year.

If we up his wages to a decent level he'd probably consider it? If he maintains his level he gets an extra year, then we can go year by year if he doesn't decline (unlikely).
Otherwise he has to wait till he's 31 and will find it much harder to get the contract he's looking for unless he goes to Westham

like i said, he could very easily get a 4-5 year contract if he left this summer

lets make up numbers
lets say he is currently on 6m a year contract, we offer him a 2+1 contract with wages of 10m a year
if lets say manchester united (who is actively trying to find a good leftback) comes in and offers a 8 million a year 4 year contract he would be dumb (financially) to reject manchester united

as a barca fan i would wish he'd sign a 2+1 contract but there's a good reason why you don't see players entering their 30's ever signing them.

i'm sure many clubs would jump at the opportunity to sign a player like jordi alba this summer with 1 year left in his contract he would be at a discounted price unless we are willing to give him up for free.

which brings up another point, if we don't settle this contract soon other clubs will be waiting around like crows and pressuring us more.
