How is that bold man? It's a natural progression and about damn time it happened. Why would we care if we took a scoring hit? Would happen no matter what.

It is bold.

A necessary gamble on your part. For what it's worth, I hope it blows up in your faces.

Cules don’t celebrate just yet, this might be the prelude of a brand new chapter for both Real Madrid and Ronaldo and something greater.

I’d rather he stayed just to stall their transitioning process and the integration of younger players.

Real Madrid probably has close to 400m to spend after selling Ronaldo. The world watch out.

What makes you think it’s about time he was replaced?

Declined some yes, but he’s still likely to score 30+ goals for Real for another few years not to mention his goal scoring in Europe against big teams is fantastic.

Big game player and still one of the best goal scorers in the world. I still think he makes a huge contribution to Real, even at his age, it’s almost impossible to replace.

Because:

-They rather sell him now for between 100 and 130m than sell him two three years later for 50m or less
-His departure clears a big chunk of their wage bill
-Most importantly, his departure makes room for the next generation of players to step in (whether it is Neymar, Mbappe or someone else) and they will only help their team in the long term

It is a win for Real Madrid.

How is it a gamble? Because we could keep him for 1, 2, 3 more years? This is like driving on a road knowing at some point down it there is a decent cliff. How fast you choose to go to get there is your choice, but you'll never avoid taking the fall. There's no gambling here. This is a forced acceleration of events that would have happened anyway. And it has very positive collateral damage. For example, in that Benzema will either crash, burn and have to be sold for an actual scorer, or he will transform into someone who is not restricted to being a 10 goal, 20 assists false #9.

We're not replacing him 1 to 1. Never will. Was never going to be the case. No need to pretend like we were. Bringing in a package of Hazard + any amount of scorers over the years is the way to go. Lopetegui is a low-risk transition coach whatever we do.

Finally we have an opportunity to change. His presence upfront will no longer have to be accounted for.

It's a great thing we're selling him while somebody is still ready to pay. Otherwise we'd pretty much have to cater to the guy until he retires.

No, it's a gamble, because you've decided that you're willing to move on earlier than you would have to. It's a gamble because you think you can replace what he brought to the team. Not on a 1:1 scale but replace nonetheless.

He's still your greatest player ever in the modern era. Selling someone like that, when you don't have to, is always a gamble.

Making hard decisions faster than necessary isn't a bad thing in the slightest. Raul stopped producing in 2006, but got to stay and rotate in with better players until 2010. Doing things like this with CR.. like moving Iker on... this was an absolutely right decision in 2015 despite him having a chance for 1 or 2 more respectable years playing in Copa behind Keylor. Leaders don't take well to their downfall in top teams and most choose to either be delusional about it, or to take the high road and leave. Xavi did it the right way. Not everybody can.
CR situation is almost definitely all down on his choices anyway. We'll see how sour this exit turns out to be for real.

And of course we have to think we can replace him. Ronaldo is one dude. Madrid doesn't fold after Ronaldo. Will Barca fold after Messi chooses to take his ball home? By that "doom-and-gloom, bold move, massive gamble" type of approach it certainly might.

I never said that a gamble is a bad thing. It's a necessary and calculated risk. I said as much. I just hope it fails spectacularly.

I just take issue with the word really. "Gamble" implies things are out of your hands. We're not putting all of our money on that one action. I suppose I can agree to "bold move" Devils used, but it still has the same ring to it when you put it in conversation like that, which is why I disagreed.

Otherwise, sure.

Cristiano's farewell message

[tw]1016709545673060352[/tw]

These years in Real Madrid, and in this city of Madrid, have been possibly the happiest of my life.

I only have feelings of enormous gratitude for this club, for this hobby and for this city. I can only thank all of them for the love and affection I have received.

However, I believe that the time has come to open a new stage in my life and that is why I have asked the club to accept transferring me. I feel that way and I ask everyone, and especially our followers, to please understand me.

They have been absolutely wonderful for 9 years. They have been 9 unique years. It has been an exciting time for me, full of consideration but also hard because Real Madrid is of a very high demand, but I know very well that I will never forget that I have enjoyed football here in a unique way.

I have had fabulous teammates in the field and in the dressing room, I have felt the warmth of an incredible crowd and together we have won 3 Champions in a row and 4 Champions in 5 years. And with them also, on an individual level, I have the satisfaction of having won 4 Gold Balls and 3 Gold Boots. All during my time in this immense and extraordinary club.

Real Madrid has conquered my heart, and that of my family, and that is why more than ever I want to say thank you: thanks to the club, the President, the directors, my colleagues, all the technicians, doctors, physios and incredible workers that make everything work and that are pending every detail tirelessly.

Thank you infinitely once more to our fans and thanks also to Spanish Football. During these 9 exciting years I have had great players in front of me. My respect and my recognition for all of them.

I have reflected a lot and I know that the time has come for a new cycle. I'm leaving but this shirt, this shield and the Santiago Bernabéu will continue to always feel as my own wherever I am.

Thanks to all and, of course, as I said that first time in our stadium 9 years ago: Hala Madrid!
