The thing is that there are hardly any WC young-ish midfielders who are even semi-available.

-We can't get Kroos or Isco from Real(duh).
-Verratti seems to be PSG-bound for the rest of his life.
-Atleti won't sell Saul or Koke.
-Thiago won't come back.

I might be one of the very few people here who's quite statisfied with the way Robert Fernandez is approaching the transfer market. Yes, he missed out on players like Ousmane Dembélé (when he played for Stade Rennes), Gabriel Jesus and Davinson Sánchez. However, I like the way he's approaching the market. Young, talented and relatively experienced players. Samuel Umtiti is the perfect example of that. Young, talented, but a lot of experience in the Ligue 1 as well. That's the way we should approach the next transfer windows.

However, I don't like the way we're settling for 'squad players' instead of the players that went through the youth ranks. We don't need 'squad players', we have/had youth players for those roles. So why would we get Lucas Digne, Jeremy Mathieu, Thomas Vermaelen, André Gomes, Arda Turan or Paco Alcácer when we had the likes of Alejandro Grimaldo, Marc Bartra, Sergi Samper, Rafinha, Sergi Roberto and Munir? When we give our youth players the chance and time to develope we're always better off that buying 'squad players'. Always.

As for our starting XI, that's where our transfer budget should be spent. Let's take the right back position as an example. Sergi Roberto had no real back-up and had to play pretty much every single game (mainly because of Lucho's feud with Aleix Vidal at first, the horrible injury of Vidal second). Sergi '95 Roberto did a decent job at right back; nothing more, nothing less. So we need a right back. Sergi Palencia looks like a decent talent, but needs time to develope and is not ready to be promoted to the first team yet. The main advantage of the B-team promotion last season is to let players like Palencia play for another season in the B-team. Our starting XI should be world class on every single position, Sergi Roberto isn't world class at right back and so we need someone there. That's why we need the best player possible on that position (without spending millions on relatively old players). Nelson Semedo looks like a very good choice, so most of us are happy.

Now for a different position. Our midfield. The position where we need a world class player, the position that a Xavi-esque player could control the midfield play. Do we have that player in our squad? No, Ivan Rakitic comes close but it's not enough. He was pretty much terrible last season and didn't do enough to earn his place in the starting XI. Does La Masía provide us with a solution? No. Carles Alèña is a promising midfielder, but is not the type of midfielder we need. He could be a future Iniesta-replacement, but we have to wait how he develops in the coming years. So we need a midfielder. Not a 'squad player', a world class midfielder. We have more than enough 'squad players' (Denis Suárez, Rafinha, Sergi Roberto, Ivan Rakitic, Andrés Gomes and Carles Alèña). That's why I think it should be like this: world class player or nothing. Like Pep said one time: Thiago oder nichts. Marco Verratti and Thiago are the only two players that are world class and fit the profile of the midfielder we should be looking for. So why are we looking at alternatives ('squad players')? No Jorginho, no Torreira. Verratti oder nichts!

Last but not least, I do get why we're chasing a 'ball winner type of player'. As Xavi said in a recent interview, our style of play should be to avoid physical duels (not win them). However, they had players like Yaya Touré and Seydou Keita to win those duels if need be. Now, Valverde only had Ivan Rakitic to win those. André Gomes and Sergi Roberto could play that role, but aren't that physically strong. Paulinho and Kondogbia are that type of players, but lack football IQ in my opinion. Since we have Busquets as our starting defensive midfielder, a 'squad player' transfer could be needed (even though I said before that we should never sign 'squad players' because La Masía could provide us with that kind of players). Now, La Masía doesn't have the answer and if Valverde wants that type of player I get why we're looking at a transfer. I don't get why we're targetting Paulinho though, I'd rather see a young, talented and relatively experienced player there (in the same mould that Robert Fernandez is approaching the transfer market). So why not go for someone like Amadou Diawara (Napoli) instead of spending 'our' money on players like Paulinho?

Why aubameyang when you have suarez? A young potential is a far better choice to replace suarez.

If we lose neymar we will have to get another world class striker in that position and aubameyang will probably cost less than 100 million and then another 100 for verratti and we'll still have a bit left over. Can't risk buying more young players who look good at smaller clubs who don't play champions league every year. We bought enough of them last year. Aubameyang is not that old and he would make some great runs for Messi to pick out

?? Makes no sense ..
Why would we let them take Neymar without us taking Verratti ?!

For PSG to sign neymar they just need to pay his buyout and get him

In Verratti's case there's no buyout, we have to negotiate and PSG already said he's not for sale.

I shouldn't be explaining this to you.
You must know it by now

Dembele (can play LW too, since he's glorious with both of his feet) 90M + Dybala (option for replacing Suarez or Messi) = 100M. And we still have 30M left for a new CB once Mascherano leaves next summer OR add this year's remaining budget and sign someone like Jorginho (one of my favourites from the normal price range) for 50M.

I'd take it.
