9 - Samuel Eto'o

lol after just one week since joining Sampdoria Eto'o is already thinking about leaving. Had a clash with the coach Mihajlovic after refusing to attend an extra training session following Sampdoria’s 5-1 defeat to Torino.

“In order to have a row, you need two people and quite frankly Eto’o did everything himself,” Mihajlovic told Mediaset.
“He just left. He told the club and it has shown a lack of respect for me and the entire team.
“I don’t know what the club intends to do."

Eto'o was a great player for us, he really was, but he is a guy both Mourinho and Pep disliked. Two completely opposite personalities. I guess that says a lot.

Not to forget that Dongou started to reject National Team Call-Ups because Eto'o scared the guy because of some money row(Dongou's agent is apparently Sammy's former business partner/agent).

He was problematic even before Pep.
He used to say that he is the best player in the world, and that if he was not a Cameroonian and if he was a Brasilian, that he would win Ballon'D'Or, and not other players.
(That is true, but it wasn't fair towards his teammate Ronaldinho, who was a winner of Ballon'd'or in those years)

He was an excellent player, but he was making a lot troubles very often.

Don't think Mourinho disliked him. They had a great time at Inter.

What a legend though. Last player to win the Champions League consecutively.

I highly doubt Mourinho disliked him. He was a very hard working player under Mourinho's CL winning 2010 Inter team.

Mourinho basically switched Eto's position to a hard working winger to accommodate Diego Milito. Eto'o basically accepted being Milito's bitch in order for the Mourinho system to work.

Can you blame him, though?
Look at how overhyped such brasilian players as Hulk (just to give one name) are, and now imagine a brasilian Eto'o who, other than his legendary club achievements (double Treble, CLs and such), could probably have in his palmares at least one World Cup; then imagine the sponsors and the media talking about him at least twice what they have done in reality, and since 90% of people follow them like sheeps, the reputation of Eto'o would have thus been much greater.
Here, all of these factors would have easily brought a Ballon d'Or to Eto'o, with him being no different at all as a player than what he has really been.
Just marketing and sponsors, Eto'o is right.

Question is, would he have won over Shevchenko (2004), Ronaldinho (2005), Cannavaro (2006), Kaka (2007), Cristiano (2008), and Messi (2009)?

Considering only 2 of those players are Brazilian are you saying that Eto'o should have won the Ballon d'Or over Ronaldinho and Kaka?

To claim that he would easily have won a Balon d'Or if only he were Brazilian is baseless, considering that he has never been in the top 3 that over this time (2004-2009) the only Brazilian players to have been in the podium are Ronaldinho and Kaka.

He didnt deserve to win over any of those. Henry had more of a case for winning the Balon d'Or.

I remember, back then, in 2004-05 Season, when we have won our first title after 6 Seasons, Etoo was personally my favorite Barca player.
Ronaldinho was a No2, for me.

It is hard to explain, but in those early days, Etoo and Ronaldinho were something like 50:50, imo (equally as good).
Etoo was banging goals like crazy, and his effort on the field was insane. (Something like Alexis or Gattuso mutliplied with 2)

Ronaldinho later somehow improved even further (in 2006 Season, matches against Real, winning CL etc).
So, later Ronaldinho was better, but in 2004-2005, Etoo was somewhat right, I agree.
He was almost as equally as good as Ronaldinho back then, but nobody cared about him because he was a Cameroonian.

But again, even though he was right, it wasn't nice to say that, because his teammate was a Brasilian.
Eto had that "me, me, me, look at me, I am the best" attitude back then. (Something like Zlatan in recent years).

These are Etoo's Goals from his 1st Season at Barca (Rijkaard's+Laporta's 2nd Season), when we won the title and lost against Chelsea in CL.
Imo, this was Etoo's best Season and in that Season he really deserved to be in top 2-3 players in the world.

Etoo scored 25 out of Barca's 73 League goals in that Season.
For example, Ronaldinho scored 9 La Liga goals that Season, and Guily 11, from our attacking trio.
Etoo was the key main in that Season, imo.

Eto is a guy who says whatever in his head ,same like Alves
It isn't always the best thing to do and teams hate it .but you have to deal with different personalities in every work .what he said wasn't nice but he is what he is

Mourinho didn't hate Eto ,he actually liked him a lot and brought him back with Chelsea and then he was caught making fun of Eto age and Eto has rightfully take it as an insult
Pep wanted Eto out even b4 he has to deal with him ,that wasn't the right start in their relation anyway and Pep publicity stating he wanted Eto/R10&Deco out wasn't the right thing to do .he didn't need to go to the media
And Ironically Pep wanted a player who is half the player Eto is(Adebayor) but the club wasn't able to either make a deal to sell Eto or bring Adebayor .Eto stayed and proved Pep wrong and still wanted him out
if anything I don't see Eto the blame for either situation

 Pep really wanted Adebayor? Never really paid attention to transfer rumors in those days.

Interesting.

But then the truth would be that there is discrimination against Cameroonian or, more broadly, against African players. Because Eto'o wasn't only beat by Ronaldinho that year, he was beat to the podium by Lampard and Gerrard. In the previous year he was beat by Deco too, and later years by Buffon, Henry, Cristiano, and Messi.

Probably that's what he meant, and I think Toure said that too recently. Not that I agree with it.
