Transfers and Rumours - old thread

Neymar will be a good addition in general, but not in any of the areas we need most improvement in.

The attack with everyone fit was still a big problem against the top teams.

It was no less a problem than the defence - which was hampered by injuries.

Both are needed clearly but attack is just as much an issue.

Again, our biggest problems in attack are on the right, and Neymar is not the solution.

Again, we probably have around 34M left since the Neymar money's being paid in installments over 3 years (meaning we're paying 16M up front, since we paid 10M beforehand and 47/3 = 16). Since Villa's probably going, we'll have around 44M. Could be enough for Silva. So I doubt that we only have enough money left for cheap mediocre players because of the Neymar transfer. Especially since we don't absolutely need a GK since Valdes isn't planning on leaving this summer.

The club and the rest of the forum doesn't seem to share our opinion, though. For some reason, Barca won't spend a lot of money in one summer, even if it fits their budget?!

Besides, since we're getting a CB, Mascherano will become an extra. Either him or Bartra. I don't wish to see either of them leave (especially not Bartra), but at some point, Barca will have to stop buying without selling. We could easily get a decent amount for Mascherano, which would be an addition to the 34M we have left over and whatever we sell Villa for.

Sell Mascherano?

He was probably the best defender last season and miles ahead of Bartra.

The biggest problem of the attack is not just on the right although I do agree that is an issue and would like to see someone comfortable there.

None of the wide players were able to help Messi or create space for him against the bigger teams

Neymar is a huge upgrade on Tello, Pedro and Sanchez.

If we don't get another top striker I'd seriously put Neymar on the left and Tello on the right which leaves Messi the middle .

I dont really understand why you defend Mascherano so much, even if he was the best defender as you say its because the others didnt play good

I defend him becuase I like him as a player and defender and would rather go into a big game with him ahead of Pique or Puyol on last seasons form and probably the season before.

Really, how many times did mr.own goal cost us last season, a billion times.

He is one of the best tacklers in the world, but his positioning, jumping and strenght are completely crap.

'Mr own goal'?

Just look at the big games in which he did not play and the defence was weaker.

Between Pique, Mascherano, Puyol and whichever new CB is arriving, we need to have two regular starters and two backups. Neither of the mentioned four is a bench player or a backup. OK, Puyol is, he should be saved for the big games. But again, that leaves Pique, Mascherano and the new guy. Mascherano is too good of a player (and he's a brilliant DM, to boot) to sit on the bench waiting to rotate with the new guy. If the new guy is the backup, then we're stuck with Pique and Mascherano again as starters, which has proven to be below the necessary standard. Pique will never be the backup. If we keep Bartra and sell Mascherano, then we're set. Bartra is young and inexperienced enough to be OK with a backup role, rotating with Pique. Not to mention this scenario would provide substantial funds. Plus, there are rumors that Napoli is willing to bid for Masch.

I tend to agree but if we dont get a striker the problems of Messi dependence won't be solved, maybe the way they play Messi on the middle and putting 2 wingers to just trying to find him and making them also scoring is the problem.Cause after all Alexis and Pedro are not enough for this role,if it was Reus it would be good for me,he proved he can also score

You really think Puyol is still the man for the big games?

I thought he looked poor in the games against Milan and Real Madrid and his legs look to have gone a bit.

Agree that Masch and Pique dont work as both need a real leader/organiser and can both look to step out of defence with the ball.

I just dont like the way people run down Masch as some kind of terrible player when he has been arguably the best defender as the club the past couple of seasons and is the best reader of the game at the back the club have.

We'll be left with 3 CBs if Puyol gets injured though. And I'd actually use Puyol to rotate with Pique and the new CB rather than save him for big games, he's too old these days, and not what he used to be. Even if we do get a youngster like Inigo Martinez or Marquinhos, I think they're good enough to start over Puyol, considering his age and all.
